The Right Reverend Nasson Baluku, Bishop of the South Rwenzori Diocese, has urged Christians to observe Christmas Day through moderation, prayer, and inner contemplation, cautioning that overindulgence in alcohol throughout the holiday period has led to an increase in incidents of domestic abuse and familial disintegration.
In his holiday address directed at followers throughout the diocese, Bishop Baluku voiced worry that numerous individuals have forgotten the genuine essence of Christmas, transforming it into a time marked by overindulgence in alcohol instead of honoring the coming of Jesus Christ.
Rather than individuals being filled with the Holy Spirit, many opt for consuming large amounts of alcohol, which contradicts what the Bible conveys," stated Bishop Baluku. "Christmas signifies the coming of Christ, peace, love, and forgiveness—not intoxication and chaos.
The Bishop pointed out that cases of domestic violence tend to rise during the holiday season, primarily due to excessive drinking, making women and children susceptible to harm within their own homes.
Numerous accounts of familial disputes, instances of women being physically abused, and children experiencing hardship during Christmas have been reported, all connected to overconsumption of alcohol," he stated. "It is very concerning for an occasion that represents harmony and kindness.
Bishop Baluku encouraged families to take advantage of the holiday period to enhance their bonds, extend forgiveness to each other, and consider Christian principles that foster peace, dignity, and solidarity inside households.
He stressed, 'Let Christmas be an occasion for families to gather, pray collectively, and commemorate with care.' 'Violence does not belong within a Christian household, particularly on the day we honor the Prince of Peace.'
He additionally urged Christians to keep the underprivileged in mind, pointing out that gestures of mercy, empathy, and generosity more accurately embody the genuine essence of Christmas compared to extravagant expenditures and excessive drinking.
The Bishop ended with a hope for a serene Christmas among followers and urged groups to transform the holiday into an era of recovery, affection, and unity instead of discord.
