Govt Allocates Over ₹46 Billion for University Infrastructure Upgrades

Sri Lanka, December 26 – The government has chosen to allocate Rs. 46,317 million for launching 16 fresh infrastructure improvement initiatives at state-run universities.

These initiatives will take place within the framework of the 2026–2030 National Development Program.

New programs will concentrate on the Universities of Moratuwa, Peradeniya, Vavuniya, Sri Jayawardenepura, Ruhuna, Eastern, and Uva Wellassa, along with the Open University of Sri Lanka.

According to the plan, Moratuwa University will be granted Rs. 3,594.14 million to build a professorial facility and purchase equipment for its Faculty of Medicine. Peradeniya University has received Rs. 2,452 million for upgrading hostels, Rs. 100 million to enlarge the student cafeteria at its Faculty of Dental Sciences, and Rs. 405 million to construct a lab facility for the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences.

In Vavuniya University, Rs. 219 million is allocated for constructing a sewage treatment facility for the dormitories. Additionally, the institution will get Rs. 45 million for a health center, Rs. 474 million for a multi-story structure, and Rs. 64 million to renovate the cafeteria within the Faculty of Applied Sciences.

The University of Sri Jayawardenepura will be allocated Rs. 3,419.38 million to build a multipurpose structure serving the Schools of Dental Science and Related Health Sciences.

A budget of Rs. 1,453.97 million has been set aside for the Faculty of Engineering at Ruhuna University. This funding will support the creation of an advanced structures engineering lab and a marine and port engineering facility, along with the extension of the Civil and Environmental Engineering department’s premises. An additional Rs. 2,342 million has been designated to construct a new laboratory for the Faculty of Agriculture.

The Eastern University has allocated Rs. 2,279 million to construct a professors' building at the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital for its Faculty of Health-Care Sciences.

The Uva Wellassa University has been allocated Rs. 649.80 million to build a facility featuring labs, workshops, and classrooms for its School of Technology.

The Open University of Sri Lanka has received Rs. 885.80 million to build a six-story structure intended for its Faculty of Management Studies.

Apart from these particular initiatives, an amount of Rs. 26,625 million has been allocated for offering hostels to university students. Prime Minister and Minister responsible for Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Training, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, recently presented a report on the execution of these projects to the Cabinet, led by the President, which was approved.

The administration seeks to accelerate these new initiatives to tackle current shortcomings in university facilities.
