The federal government has verified continuous collaboration in security and intelligence efforts between Nigeria and the U.S., after air strikes targeted extremist groups in northwest Nigeria.
This has resulted in accurate airstrikes targeting terrorists in northern Nigeria.
A statement released on Friday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, authored by spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, mentioned that Nigerian officials continue to work through "structured security collaboration with global allies, such as the United States," to tackle terrorism and extreme violence within the nation.
The government stated that the partnership, resulting in accurate air strikes against militant groups, includes exchange of information, tactical cooperation, and additional types of assistance consistent with global laws, acknowledgment of Nigeria's independence, and mutual safety obligations.
"Nigeria emphasizes that every anti-terror initiative is driven by the priority of ensuring civilian safety, maintaining national cohesion, and respecting the rights and honor of all people, regardless of their religion or ethnic background," the statement noted.
It stated that acts of terror, "regardless of whether they target Christians, Muslims, or other groups, continue to be a violation of Nigeria's principles and a threat to global peace and stability."
The declaration came after remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump, who stated on Thursday that American troops had conducted deadly strikes opposing ISIS militants in northwestern Nigeria.
"Tonight, under my leadership as President, the United States carried out a strong and lethal attack on ISIS terrorist elements in North West Nigeria, which have been attacking and brutally murdering mainly innocent Christians," Trump posted on his Truth Social account.
He stated, "The Army carried out many flawless attacks, something only the United States can accomplish."
Trump cautioned that additional strikes would occur if the murder of Christians persisted, stating, "If they didn't cease the massacre of Christians, there would be consequences, and tonight, there were."
In another social media update, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that Washington worked alongside Nigeria.
Thankful for the support and collaboration from the Nigerian government," Hegseth stated, noting that the Department of War "is always prepared.
The Department of State stated that Nigeria will keep collaborating with its allies via official diplomatic and security pathways to undermine extremist groups, hinder their financial support and supply chains, and stop transnational dangers.
Airstrikes occurred one day following an explosion at a mosque in Maiduguri, Borno State, which resulted in five fatalities and numerous injuries, with officials believing it may have been a suicide attack.
The department stated that it will continue to update the public via proper governmental channels.
