Kyoto University Launches Scholarships for Female Science Students

KYOTO - The Department of Science at Kyoto University plans to create a financial assistance program to help cover the initial rental costs for female students who come from faraway places.

A 300,000 yen ($1,925) scholarship will begin in the 2026 school term to help cover increased apartment rental expenses for units equipped with improved safety measures like automatic locks, monitored entry systems, surveillance cameras, and onsite staff.

In the last five years, the count of women enrolled in the faculty has been as follows: 30 in 2025, 35 in 2024, 24 in 2023, 33 in 2022, and 21 in 2021, representing percentages of 9.55%, 11.25%, 7.43%, 10.15%, and 6.46% respectively.

During the 2025 academic term, 664 females enrolled in various departments, representing an enrollment rate of 22.89%. The Faculty of Science recorded the smallest proportion of female learners when contrasted with similar scientific disciplines like Medicine (36.07%), Pharmacy (31.76%), Agriculture (30.94%), and Engineering (12.19%), which has led to discussions about potential enhancements.

Information regarding details, such as qualification criteria, will be released in mid-January 2026. The foundation for the roughly 300,000 yen assistance sum and the financial scope remain unspecified following a recent discussion.
