On the 25th, Coupang stated that it secured a statement from a previous Chinese worker who illegally disclosed customer data involving 33.7 million individuals and retrieved equipment like computers and notebooks utilized for the offense. "The real quantity of personal details kept by the employee amounted to roughly 3,000, much less than the total entries viewed," Coupang clarified.
In materials released on the same day, Coupang said, "We found the ex-employee who leaked customer details through forensic methods like digital traces. The person admitted to everything and gave thorough explanations about how they obtained the customer data."
As per the whistleblower's statement, they utilized unauthorized security credentials to retrieve fundamental details of 33.7 million client accounts, though they kept data from roughly 3,000 accounts. The exposed material comprised 2,609 standard entry code combinations, along with names, electronic mail addresses, telephone numbers, residential locations, and some purchase-related specifics.
Following the start of investigations in South Korea, the individual who leaked information tried to erase proof by destroying laptops involved in the offense and throwing them into a river. Divers subsequently retrieved the laptops from the water, and their serial numbers corresponded, according to Coupang.
Coupang stated, "After becoming aware of the media reports regarding the incident, the individual who leaked the information erased all saved details, and no data was sent to external entities. On the 17th of this month, we provided the leaker's written declaration along with the relevant devices involved in the unauthorized disclosure to the authorities."
Coupang said, "We will keep providing information as the current inquiries advance and will disclose customer reimbursement strategies individually very soon."
