An American entrepreneur and humanitarian, Chief Afolami Awosika, has formally transferred three contemporary sports courts constructed inside the Ondo Township Stadium to the administration of Ondo State.
At the transfer event organized in Ondo on Tuesday, Chief Awosika stated that the construction of basketball, volleyball, and grass tennis facilities was designed as an intentional effort to encourage youth participation constructively and to back the Osemawe of Ondo's initiative aimed at advancing local-level sports growth.
As he stated, "the facilities aim to channel young people's energy effectively, develop their abilities, and support the Osemawe's objective of employing sports to combat cult activities, teenage unrest, and other societal problems, simultaneously providing chances to identify athletes who can excel internationally."
Chief Awosika, who now carries the chiefdom title of Lomafe from the Ondo Kingdom, emphasized his conviction that effective youth growth starts with intentionally creating secure and useful environments where young individuals can direct their energies constructively.
He stated that athletics not only encourage physical health but also teach important qualities like cooperation, self-control, and determination, all of which are crucial for developing accountable future leaders.
He also mentioned that setting up the courts along with the related competition was his humble method of contributing back to the Ondo community which raised him.
During his comments, the governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who was present through the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Omoyofunmi Henry, conveyed the state administration's gratitude to Chief Awosika for his commendable act.
He characterized the contribution as a strong example of successful collaboration between the public and private sectors in advancing athletic growth.
The leader pledged that the state administration would guarantee effective handling, upkeep, and efficient utilization of the resources to fulfill their designated role in promoting young people's involvement and skill growth.
He mentioned that the program corresponds to his government's dedication to supporting youth, developing athletic facilities, and establishing opportunities for young individuals to succeed positively.
A previous leader of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, who attended the gathering, commended Chief Afolami Awosika for his long-term dedication to improving communities and supporting young people.
He characterized the gift of the athletic facilities as an opportune and significant gesture that demonstrates a strong appreciation for the part sport plays in developing fit, well-mannered, and efficient young people.
Mimiko pointed out that such investments bolster social advancement programs and support governmental actions focused on developing talent starting from the community level.
He urged additional sincere individuals and business entities to follow suit, emphasizing that teamwork continues to be essential in establishing lasting frameworks that will support youth and create a better tomorrow for Ondo State.
The Osemawe of the Ondo Kingdom, King Victor Kiladejo, who attended the event, praised Chief Awosika for his vision and dedication towards empowering young people via athletics.
The ruler referred to the contribution as a calculated investment aimed at securing the future of young people from Ondo, highlighting that athletics continues to be among the best means for developing personality, fostering self-control, and promoting community unity.
Oba Kiladejo also highlighted that the facilities will support conventional and government initiatives designed to channel the energy of youth into profitable activities.
He emphasized once again his conviction that consistent involvement in sports could lower crime rates, promote harmony, and establish Ondo as a hub for exceptional athletes competing nationally and internationally.
One of the key moments at the gathering was the launch of the Chief Afolami Victor Awosika (CAVA) competitions, showcasing thrilling matches in various sporting events, where champions were crowned in every division.
During the lawn tennis competition, the Senior Staff Tennis Club from Akure won the gold prize in the doubles section by defeating the Ondo Tennis Club. Meanwhile, Olakunle Gbologe from UNIMED secured victory in the singles division by beating Olanrewaju Akinnagbe from the Ondo Tennis Club.
In basketball, the UNIMED squad surpassed the Don Bosco Youths with a final result of 73–55, securing the gold medal, whereas the Ondo City Spikers Club overcame Akure Dynamite Spikers Club in two consecutive sets to claim victory in the volleyball event.
