Why Gombe ECWA Dropped Out of the 2025 CAN Christmas Rally

On Wednesday, the Evangelical Church Winning All in Gombe State clarified their absence from the 2025 Christmas Rally hosted by the Christian Association of Nigeria, pointing to long-standing claims of discrimination, exclusionary practices, and ineffective management within the broader Christian organization.

As per the guidance from the church authorities, the choice was made together by the ECWA Gombe District Church Council and the ECWA Gombe West District Church Council, as stated in a declaration provided to our reporter.

As per the statement acquired by Arewa PUNCH All ECWA churches, organizations, and members located within the Gombe city area have been instructed to disengage from the event and all CAN-associated Christmas celebrations for the 2025 year.

The head of ECWA Gombe West DCC, Reverend Sa'idu Kwari, along with the leader of ECWA Gombe DCC, Reverend Dr Adamu Dauda, stated that the choice came after many years of seeking guidance through prayers, discussions, and ongoing issues that had not been resolved.

"This choice is not driven by emotion or haste. It stems from continuous thought and increasing worry about the ongoing disregard and exclusion of ECWA members in CAN events and their representation in Gombe State," ECWA stated.

ECWA also claimed that the CAN leadership did not offer concrete assistance to ECWA members who suffered from previous violent events in different areas of the state, pointing out that numerous affected families have still not received attention up until now.

The church also condemned what it referred to as the marginalization of ECWA from significant governmental actions, aid initiatives, and lobbying activities carried out via CAN frameworks, even though it remains a key participant in the organization.

ECWA emphasized that the ongoing trend of remaining silent and only engaging selectively has damaged confidence, stating, "Although we have made contributions and shown dedication to Christian unity, ECWA has kept facing being left out of important discussions. This has significantly challenged the tolerance and positive attitude of our members," the declaration added.

In accordance with the decision, ECWA stated that none of the church buildings or resources managed by it will be utilized to organize or back any CAN Christmas event during this period.

The leaders stated that the exit was intended to safeguard the solidarity, moral integrity, and well-being of its participants.

The statement further noted, 'We are dedicated to genuine Christian testimony, rather than mere symbolism devoid of real meaning.'

Instead of the Christmas gathering, ECWA advised its regional churches to implement locally-focused Christmas activities, such as friendly visits to customary chiefs and neighborhood leaders, along with prayer sessions and messages promoting harmony at the community level.

The congregation stated that this method embodies their conviction that Christian testimony is best shown through substantial connections and fostering harmony instead of visible demonstrations.

ECWA once again pledged its dedication to the unity of the Church, emphasizing that this unity should be founded upon justice, equity, responsibility, and compassion.

The church called on its followers to stay composed, obey the laws, and engage in prayers during the Christmas period, conveying optimism that the choice would inspire introspection and changes among CAN leaders.
