Kwankwaso: Weak Political Will Fuels Insecurity

A former governor of Kano State and ex-minister for defence, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has blamed Nigeria's ongoing instability on insufficient political determination instead of shortcomings within the military.

On Tuesday, Kwankwaso addressed the event as the Special Guest of Honor during the graduation ceremony for 2,000 new members of the Kano State Neighborhood Watch Corps.

Arewa PUNCH states that the event was arranged by the Kano State Government to officially welcome the personnel into community-driven security initiatives throughout the state.

A message published on his officially verified Facebook page on Tuesday included remarks from the ex-governor stating that Nigeria's armed forces have consistently shown their capability in global peace operations yet lack sufficient authority to effectively address robbery and extremism within the country.

"Our issue as a nation isn't the lack of skilled military personnel. Nigerian forces have demonstrated their capability in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Darfur, and various other global operations," Kwankwaso stated.

Equipped with proper tools, adequate instruction, and strong management, they have the capability to overcome the lawbreakers controlling areas without effective governance in Nigeria.

He urged the national administration to implement firm measures against criminals and terrorist organizations, emphasizing the importance of significant funding for hiring new staff, acquiring up-to-date gear, and ongoing training for law enforcement officers.

Kwankwaso also extended his congratulations to the recently sworn-in Neighborhood Watch officials and praised Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for focusing on community-level safety.

"I commend these young individuals for stepping forward to take charge of safeguarding their neighborhoods. They should carry out their responsibilities with commitment, orderliness, and expertise," he stated.

The ex-defense minister also recommended that the federal government explore integrating skilled young individuals from state-supported security groups in the Northwest and other areas into the national military.

He stated that Nigeria needs at least 1 million armed forces to properly protect its people and extensive land area.

"our security issues require courageous choices. bringing in skilled young people from community-based security programs into the military will enhance the nation's capabilities and aid in rebuilding safety throughout the country," he further stated.

Comments made by Kwankwaso took place during the graduation event for the Kano State Neighborhood Watch Corps, an initiative the state administration claims is designed to support traditional law enforcement bodies in addressing criminal activities within local communities.
